Portland's historic landscape, World heritage Site, threatened by quarrying.

Some of the world's finest buildings are built of the famous Portland Stone. This has given employment and pride to the Island of Portland over many centuries. But one devastating decision by the British government nearly 60 years ago now threatens what little remains of the Island's precious environment and historic landscape. The Royal Manor of Portland is a small peninsula projecting into the English Channel. It has a fantastically rich history. It is home to 13000 people very few now involved in quarrying. Portland is at the centre of the UNESCO World Heritage Site; Britain's Jurassic Coast. Please support the campaign to stop this new destruction; see www.

IPA: [mu?'t?i?u du? ??'??nimu?]) is located in the Bel?m district of Lisbon, Portugal. This magnificent monastery can be considered one of the most prominent monuments in Lisbon and is certainly one of the most successful achievements of the Manueline style. In 1983 it was classified by the UNESCO, with nearby Torre de Bel?m, as a World Heritage Site. CThe house for the Hieronymite monks was built on the same site of the Ermida do Restelo, a hermitage that was founded by Henry the Navigator at about 1450. It was at this hermitage, that was already in disrepair, that Vasco da Gama and his men spent the night in prayer before departing for India in 1497. The existing structure was started on the orders of Manuel I (1515-1520) to commemorate Vasco da Gama's successful return from India. It was originally meant as a church for the burial of the House of Aviz, but it also became a house of prayer for seamen leaving or entering port. Construction of the monastery began in 1502 and took 50 years to complete. He used pedra lioz, a local gold-coloured limestone, for its construction. The building of the monastery was funded by a 5% tax on eastern spices, with the exceptions of pepper, cinnamon and cloves, revenue from which went straight to the Crown. By this influx of riches, the architects had enough financial margin to think big. The enormous amount of funds needed for this monastery, meant abandoning the construction of the Aviz pantheon in the Monastery of Batalha. The monastery was designed in the Manueline style by Diogo de Boitaca (who was probably one of the originators of this style with the Igreja de Jesus in Set?bal). He built the church, the monastery, the sacristy and the refectory. He was succeeded by the Spaniard Jo?o de Castilho, who took charge of construction in around 1517. Jo?o de Castilho gradually moved from the Manueline style to the Plateresco style, a style with lavish decorations that remind of silver ware (plata = silver). There were several sculptors who made their mark on this building. Nicolau Chanterene added depth with his Renaissance themes. The construction came to a halt when the king Manuel I died in 1520. The architect Diogo de Torralva resumed the construction of the monastery in 1550, adding the main chapel, the choir and completing the two storeys of the monastery, using only Renaissance motifs. His work was continued in 1571 by J?r?me de Rouen (also called Jer?nimo de Ru?o) who added some Classical elements. The construction stopped in 1580 with the union of Spain and Portugal, because the building of the Escorial in Spain was now draining away all the funds. The monastery withstood the Great Earthquake of 1755 without too much damage. But when the building became vacant in 1833 by the abolition of the religious orders in Portugal, it began to deteriorate to the point of almost collapsing. A cupola was later added to the southwestern tower. On December 13, 2007 the Treaty of Lisbon has been signed at the monastery, laying down the basis for the reform of the European Union. http://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mosteiro_dos_Jer?nimos http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jer?nimos_Monastery http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mosteiro_dos_Jer?nimos http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monasterio_de_los_Jer?nimos_de_Bel?m http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monast?re_des_Hi?ronymites VALPARD FILMS http://valpardfilms.awardspace.com/

Pershing was notified that he was under consideration to command expeditionary forces sent to the main fighting front in France. Originally projected as just four regiments, his American Expeditionary Force would grow to encompass 43 divisions, grouped into nine corps, and three field armies. The Abenaki and Forced Sterilization in Vermont

It was during this time period that the Abenaki were left with little choice but to go underground. The [other] groups that were targeted were largely traveling and hidden. The Abenaki were out in the open and the obvious targets. Many Abenaki were forced to assume other identities or hide their heritage. "It is my opinion that the "new racism" of Vermont's elite eventually permeated Abenaki society, leading to shame at being different or fear that we or our children would be "discovered" by the state of Vermont and have evil things done to them. " (The Voice of the Dawn: An Autohistory of the Abenaki Nation, pp. 147-49). The easiest route for the Abenaki to take was to fit in with the French-Canadians of Vermont. The history of Eugenics is a sad and damaging one. What it left behind is a loss of culture and a trail of broken families. The Abenaki of Vermont were the hardest hit. To this day in Vermont, the Abenaki are suffering the effects of the Eugenics Program. When the Abenaki went into hiding, they broke their historical trail. Because the tribe has not been a continuous entity, and many show up with the ethnicity of French-Canadian, it is difficult to decipher who belongs to the tribe. In an article in the Boston Globe titled Eugenics Victims Heard At Last, Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes is quoted saying, ''It is better for all the world, if instead of waiting to execute degenerate offspring for crime, or letting them starve for their imbecility, society can prevent those who are manifestly unfit from continuing their kind.'' Ultimately, this is what we are doing today. In 2007, the Abenaki are still struggling for state recognition. The same fear of the tribes that caused the Eugenics program in Vermont so many years ago is still here. With fears of the Abenaki trying to reclaim lost land or opening casinos in Vermont, we are still practicing Eugenics by holding the Abenaki people back from the Wobanakik that was theirs to begin with. Eugenics, The study of hereditary improvement of the human race by controlled selective breeding, is something that most people associate with Nazi-Germany. What few people choose to remember is that Eugenics has played a major role in American History as well. During the first half of the 20th Century, Eugenics flourished within Vermont. Karagianis Statement: Esquimalt Naval and Military Museum

My community of Esquimalt has a long and proud naval and military tradition, and that pride is on display at CFB Esquimalt Naval and Military Museum. Located in 19th century buildings at NADEN on Canadian Forces Base Esquimalt, this museum informs and educates with displays and exhibits telling the remarkable story of Canada's naval presence on the west coast right from 1848, when Esquimalt Harbour began to be used as an anchorage. The museum is part of a national historical district and traces the ups and downs of the Canadian navy with a series of exhibits from the navy's formation in 1910 through the turbulence of two world wars, the conflict in Korea and beyond. It tells the story of the Women's Royal Canadian Naval Service and the challenges of defending Canada's west coast. The museum represents the proud heritage of the Canadian Women's Army Corps, which had its beginnings at the Esquimalt base in 1941. Nearly 22,000 women served in the Canadian Women's Army Corps in the Second World War, paving the way for future generations of Canadian servicewomen and bringing the issues about equality to the forefront. As well as exhibits and displays, CFB Esquimalt Naval and Military Museum houses an expanding archive and library that includes thousands of photographs, documents, histories of Canadian naval vessels, navigational charts, biographies of important leaders in the Royal Canadian Navy and much, much more. The museum has grown in size and scope thanks to the tireless and dedicated efforts of its staff and volunteers. I hope the members here will join me in acknowledging the importance of their work and thank them for their contribution in celebrating our proud military and naval history. I sincerely hope that members will take the advantage to go to the museum and view the things that they have on display there.

Fairouz - Nassam Alayna Al Hawa - ????? - ??? ????? ?????

Neighbor to the Moon, Ambassador to the Stars, the legend of today is yesterday's shy little village girl. The superstar acclaimed by millions as magical, brilliant, and angelic is our one and only Fairuz. Born and raised in Lebanon, Fairuz began her musical career as a teenager. From chorus girl at the Lebanese radio station in the late 1940s, to critical and popular acclaim from the 1950's to today, Fairuz is acknowledged not only for her musical talent and contribution, but also as a cultural and political icon. A symbol of a people, a heritage, a quest for peace, and of humanity. During most of her career, Fairuz reflected two other great artists, Assi and Mansour Rahbani. They wrote the lyrics and composed her tunes. Today, many of her songs reflect the composing talent of Ziad Rahbani who is Fairuz's son. Her songs testify to the Rahbani musical genius, as well as to Fairuz's broad musical background. As Dr. J. Racy says, "More than just a singer's name, Fairuz is a concept whose connotations are ethnic and nationalistic, as well as musical and poetic." Referred to as "The Soul of Lebanon" in the 70's, Fairuz became a pre-eminent figure, a superstar of current music in the Arab world. Together, the Rahbani family is both a school of music and a cultural phenomenon. For the girl who loved to sing to her friends and neighbors in the little village, it was an overwhelming experience when, in 1957, Lebanon's President Chamoun presented Fairuz with the "Cavalier", the highest medal ever conferred on a Lebanese Artist. In 1969 a memorial Lebanese stamp was issued in her name. Meeting royalty, once an experience she had expected to encounter only in the fairy tales of her childhood, has become a reality for her. She is routinely welcomed, greeted, received, and honored by today's world leaders. In 1963, King Hussein of Jordan presented her with the Medal of Honor, followed by his Majesty's Gold Medal in 1975. In Brazil, the crowds attempted to carry her with her limousine. In 1981, while touring in the U.S., Senators, Governors and Mayors of various cities honored her. A Harvard University scholar, Barry Hoberman, even wrote: "Quite simply, Fairuz is one of the world's nonpareil musicians and outstanding Artists, an international treasure of the order of Rostropovich, Sills, Ravi Shankar, Miles Davis, Sutherland, Pavarotti and Dylan." Her record-breaking concerts at the Royal Festival Hall in London made headlines worldwide. The Daily Mail wrote: "The box office was besieged as never before. Tickets changed hands at more than 1,000 Pounds on the black market. Takings reached a record, breaking the previous best when Frank Sinatra was in town. And who was the star that packed them in last night? Madonna? Springsteen? Domingo? Horowitz? No ... FAIRUZ, the top female singer in the Arab world". Fairuz has headlined at the most prestigious venues in the world including the Albert Hall, Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and Salle Pleyel, among many others. One day in 1935, Wadi Haddad moved his wife and two children into a new home on the cobblestone alley called Zuqaq al-blat, an old neighborhood in Beirut where the poor of all denominations have for generations found company and shelter. The Haddad's new home consisted of a single room on the street level of a typical stone house that faced Beirut's Patriarchate school. Several other families were also living in the house; the residents shared the kitchen and other facilities. This was a time of migrations when a family could suddenly appear from nowhere and seek their next of kin, relatives, or just acquaintances from their own village who had already arrived in the big city. Wadi (a name meaning "gentle"), who worked as a typesetter in a nearby print shop, was quiet and gentle in manner; he was readily accepted by the folk of the neighborhood as one of them.
