Exiled artist harnesses nature to share his past through contemporary paintings
Native Iraqi artist Jabbar Al Janabi translates his expertise of music, dance and spoken word into contemporary paintings with the aid of nature's elements in his debut solo exhibition Phantasma. Layers upon layers of sun-baked paint crack and weather the surface to form haunting and alluring imagery. Phantasma runs from August 5th until the 27th at Yaletown Gallery. The artist's reception is August 7th at 7pm.
Classically trained at the Baghdad Institute of Art, Al Janabi's work has been shown in galleries and museums throughout Baghdad and Jordan and focus on mythological themes using symbols from Mesopotamian and Eastern arts.
In 2002, Al Janabi founded the AtmAsphere Art Society with a mandate to develop and promote cross-discipline and cross-cultural collaborations. ANU, an annual fall performance at The Roundhouse is one such project.
Yaletown Gallery is located at 123--1208 Homer Street (at Davie) in downtown Vancouver, and is devoted to bridging the gap between artists and the community and to create opportunities and appreciation for emerging, local artists.
